You let me down, Bobbi. Review of “Secret to Standout Eyes.”

The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is going on now, (yay!), so it’s a great time to pick up beauty specials, a new pair of jeans, or boots for the fall.

Naturally, I went straight to the cosmetics department to scout out the deals. I picked up the Bobbi Brown Secret to Standout Eyes set, which contains 12 eyeshadows, full size mascara, full size gel liner, and mini liner brush, all for $85.

As far as what you get for the money, it’s a great deal.

Until I tried the set.

The kit comes with a little instruction card with tips on achieving various looks. I’ve tried each look for you (you’re welcome!) and am here to report back.

Look 1: Classic Eye. Basically matte neutrals with contouring.

Look 2: Smokey Eye. The same base as above, but layered with deeper shades of sparkling shadows. Additional liner above and below lash line.

Look 3: Party Eye. A simple sparkle shadow with navy and black liner.

After trying all 3 looks, I was really disappointed with the quality of the eyeshadows in this kit. I practically had to scrub the shadows with my brush before resorting to using my fingertips for application. They are so low pigment, I can’t even begin to justify the cost of this set. The matte shadows required multiple layers to be visible and the shimmering shadows only yielded glitter.  It will be returned and the search for a perfect shadow palette continues.

On the upside, I really like the Smokey Eye Mascara and Long Wear Gel Eyeliner and would gladly purchase both separately.

Hopefully this saves you a few bucks, or you can scratch it off your wish list. Thanks for reading!

  1. Great review! This is super helpful to know! I’ve heard that Bobbi Brown’s products are extremely low pigmented, which is really sad for the price that they cost! Thanks for letting me know<3

Thanks so much for the kind comment! It seems that powder shadow is just not what they do best.
