I’ve had a long love affair with brow pencils ever since the “incident” (commonly referred to as the late 90’s). So should you pony up the extra cash or save a few pennies on your brows? Read on to find out!
Anastasia Brow Wiz in Dark Brown, $21
NYX Cosmetics Auto Eyebrow Pencil in Dark Brown , $4.75
Sephora Retractable Brow Pencil – Waterproof in Midnight Brown (not pictured), $13
Anastasia Brow wiz is the brow pencil is a cult favorite with good reason. It glides on easily, has a perfectly neutral range of colors, and stays put all day. The packaging is excellent, the fine tip creates realistic hair strokes and the spoolie brush on the back is great to have on hand. The downside? You don’t get a lot of product for the price, mine was gone within 6 weeks.
NXY Cosmetics: It was hard to pass up a five dollar brow pencil with a built in brush on the handle. Unfortunately, this product fails in several ways. First, the tip has an oval shape, making it difficult to control the product as desired. Second, the “dark brown” was very auburn and not dark enough to match true dark brown hair. Unfortunately, inaccurate colors are usually why I avoid bargain brow pencils.
Sephora Collection: A close imitation of Anastasia’s Brow wiz, this products fine tip and mostly neutral color range applies easily and stays in place pretty well, but you might need a touch up after 8 hours. Midnight Brown is a nice dark brown, but it’s a little warmer in tone than I’d like. Also, the comb on the back end wasn’t worth the plastic that took to make it. I ended up using my spoolie off the Anastasia Brow pencil.
The clear winner here is Anastasia Brow wiz, with it’s neutral colors and excellent packaging. However, if you’re not too keen on spending $21 every six weeks, the Sephora pencil is a safe bet at a $8 savings, just know you may want to keep it on hand in case it fades. It’s a general statement, but I’ve never found a cheap brow pencil that wasn’t too red, auburn, or poorly packaged. Steer clear of the budget brands unless you are willing to do a lot of experimenting.
