When it comes to lipstick, I have very high standards. For a product to make the cut, it must meet the following requirements:
- Absolute comfort of wear. It must not be drying, grainy, overly-perfumed, sticky, waxy, or slippery
- Long wear with a nice fade. I expect 4 hours of full color. When it does fade, it should do so evenly- not sinking into cracks or leaving a lipliner look.
- Rich, even pigment. It should be easy to control the amount of pigment that you apply, ranging from sheer to full color depending on application.
- The packaging should not inhibit the overall experience – even better if it enhances the product.
I know this list comes off as a little “crazy person,” and I’m comfortable with that. Lipstick is my thing, it defines my look, so I might as well be good at it. With all that said, I’ve found one lipstick to rule them all – Yve Saint Laurent’s Rouge Pur Couture Glossy Stain. It’s so good, I actually hesitated to tell you about it, because I want them all to myself.
What it is: A gloss, stain, and lipstick, rolled into one, in a lip-gloss package.
What it does: Goes on like a gloss, covers like a lipstick, lasts like a stain.
Why I’m in love: YSL’s Glossy Stain is by far the most well formulated lip product I’ve ever tried. When you first apply the product, it feels like butter on the lips due to an emollient rich formula. Speaking of application- the package comes with a gloss applicator that makes ergonomic application a real thing. The end of the applicator is actually on a slant which means you can see where you are applying the product. The applicator head is sort of diamond shape, making precise application super easy.
The wear on this product is what really makes me love it. At first, its a high shine lip color that has a dimensional appearance. After a few sips of coffee, it looks like a satin finish lipstick. After a few hours of talking, lip-licking, etc, it wears down to a beautiful stain. After 5 hours, my lips still have color and they feel moisturized and comfortable. There is absolutely no bleeding, feathering, lip lining, or other shenanigans.
The only downside (are you listening YSL?) is the limited range of shades. Yes, there are at least 40 shades, but I’m having a hard time finding more shades that I love as much as my #24 (Fuchsia Intemporel). It seems that several of the shades are too similar to each other, or unwearable purples. Also, it’s pretty expensive at $35, but considering how good the formula is, I don’t mind paying more for a great product.
Final Thoughts: If you love color that just won’t stop, this product is a must for your beauty bag.
